Where Tradition Meets Innovation in Thoroughbred Excellence
History
HP Thoroughbreds is a boutique operation run by Anthony and Kristen Evans. Despite owning just three mares on their 236-acre farm on the outskirts of the Hunter Valley, they've made a significant mark in the industry. Their journey began at Baramul Stud, where Anthony worked as a yearling manager and Kristen managed broodmares. Eventually, they partnered both in life and business, branching out to create their own thoroughbred operation.
They purchased a former spelling farm once owned by the Miller family, which was home to legendary Newcastle trainer Max Lees' racehorses, including notable names like Coutry Tyrone and Empire. Located near Dungog on the eastern fringe of the Hunter Valley, their farm, Hilldale, is just an hour’s drive from Newcastle—a key advantage.
Hilldale benefits from coastal rainfall that often misses the more inland regions of the Hunter Valley. Additionally, before becoming a horse farm, the property was used for poultry and dairy farming, meaning the land has been heavily fertilised over the years, providing ideal conditions for racehorse development.
The Farm
Spanning 236 acres in Hilldale, NSW, HP Thoroughbreds is set on some of the most fertile land in the region. Years of coastal rainfall and nutrient-rich soil have created an environment where horses can truly thrive. Our paddocks are spacious and shaded by mature gum trees, offering natural shelter and a tranquil setting that promotes well-being and growth.
The farm features state-of-the-art facilities, including a 10-horse yearling barn, 20 stables, a 9-horse walker, an arena, and an undercover round yard. With undercover vetting facilities and seamless walk-ons to all Hunter Valley studs, our property is designed to cater to every aspect of horse care and development.
At HP Thoroughbreds, we combine nature’s advantages with modern infrastructure to create the perfect environment for raising and preparing exceptional horses.
